अत्तरगाथा भाग-२

संगीत आणि सुगंध यात खूपच साम्य आहे. जशी एखादी संगीतरचना आपल्या मनात एक विशिष्ट भाव निर्माण करते, तसेच एखादा गंध आपल्याला जुन्या आठवणीत घेऊन जातो. पर्फुमर जेव्हा एखादे पर्फुम तयार करतो तेव्हा त्याला त्या पर्फुम मधील नोट्सच्या माध्यमातून एक गंध महेफील साधायची असते. विविध गंधाची ही मेहफिल फुलवणं ही एक कला आहे आणि पर्फुमरच्या मनासारखे पर्फुम बनवायला त्याला अनेक ट्रायल्स कराव्या  लागतात ज्याला सहज ६ ते १२ महिन्याच्या कालावधी लागु शकतो.

कुठल्याही पर्फुम मध्ये ३ नोट्स असतात- टॉप नोट्स, मिड किंवा हार्ट नोट्स, आणि बेस नोट्स. जेव्हा सगळ्यात प्रथम आपण पर्फुम लावतो तेव्हा टॉप नोट्स मधील ऑइल्सचा वास आपल्याला येतो. तो साधारण पहिली १०-२० मिनिटे राहतो. त्याच्या नंतर मिड नोट्सचा वास यायला सुरुवात होते, जो साधारणतः १- २ तास राहतो. या नोट्सचा वास पूर्ण जायच्या आधीच बसे नोट्सचा वास यायला लागतो. या मधल्या काळात आपल्याला बेस आणि मिड नोट्सचा संमिश्र वास येतो, आणि मग हळूहळू मिड नोट्स अस्त पावून केवळ बेस नोट्स शेवट पर्यंत सुगंध देत राहतात.  या सगळ्या मागचे रसायन शास्त्र विचारात घेतले तर ज्या द्रव्यांचे मॉलिक्युल्स वजनाने हलके असतात, ते लवकर हवेत मिसळतात (टॉप नोट्स) आणि ज्या द्रव्यांचे मोलेक्युल्स वजनाने जड असतात ते सगळ्यात उशिरा हवेत मिसळतात (बेस नोट्स). आता आपल्या नेहमीच्या वापरातील पर्फुममध्ये कोणते गंध कोणत्या नोट्स बरोबर येतात ते पाहूया. 

टॉप नोट्स- मुख्यत: फळांचे वास टॉप नोट्स मध्ये मोडतात. Bergamot, लेमन, ऑरेंज, ग्रेपफ्रूट, बेरीज, लॅव्हेंडर, मिंट हे काही प्रसिद्ध टॉप नोट्सचे वास आहेत. 

मिड नोट्स ह्या जनरली फुलांचे वास घेऊन येतात. गुलाब, जाई, केवडा, नेरोली, जायफळ, लेमन ग्रास, लँग लँग ( चाफा), कोथिंबीर ह्या काही पॉप्युलर मिड नोट्स आहेत. 

बेस नोट्स या कायम खोल व गडद वासाच्या असतात. मुख्यतः लाकूड (चंदन, ओक, सिडर), तंबाकू, पचुली, व्हॅनिला, Oud (उद), अँबेरगीस(अंबर), कस्तुरी (मस्क) या सगळ्या बेस नोट्स आहेत. पर्फुमच्या स्वभावानुसार कधी कधी मिड नोट्स आणि बेस नोट्सची अदलाबदली होऊ शकते. जसे व्हॅनिलाचा गंध बऱ्याच लेडीज पर्फुममध्ये मिड नोट म्हणून वापरला आहे. 

पर्फुमचा स्थायीभाव - जसे शास्त्रीय संगीतात कुठलीही संगीतरचना ही एखाद्या रागावर बसलेली असते, त्याच प्रमाणे प्रयेक पर्फुमचा एक मूळ स्वभाव असतो. त्याला ऍकॉर्ड असे म्हणतात. पर्फुमर जेव्हा ३ नोट्सच मिश्रण करतो तेव्हा त्याच्या मनात एखादी ऍकॉर्ड पक्की असते, आणि त्याला अनुषंगूनच तो नोट्सची निवड करतो. आता या ऍकॉर्ड कशा बनतात हा मोठा अभ्यासाचा विषय आहे. त्यासाठी पर्फुमरीचा कोर्स करावा लागेल. फ्रान्समध्ये अनेक कॉलजेस मध्ये हे पर्फुमेरीचे कोर्सेस शिकवले जातात.

नैसर्गिक दुर्मिळ सुगंध-

आता जरी रसायन शास्त्राच्या विकासामुळे बहुतांशी गंध हे सिन्थेटिकली प्रयोगशाळेत तयार करता येतात, तरीही नैसर्गिक सुगंधाची मागणी ही आंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजारपेठेत कायमच आहे, आणि यामुळे याची तस्करीही मोठ्या प्रमाणात चालते. असेच काही दुर्मिळ सुगंध-

Ambergis (अंबर)- हे आपल्याला व्हेल माशाची एक दुर्मिळ जात-स्पर्म र्व्हेलच्या विष्टेतून, किंवा उलटीतून मिळते. हा पदार्थ व्हेलनी बाहेर टाकल्यावर पाण्यावर तरंगत किनाऱ्यापाशी येतो. पण पैशाच्या हव्यासापायी लोकं याची वाट न बघताच व्हेलसीची शिकार करून त्यांचे पोट कापून ambergis बाहेर काढतात. 

Oud (ऊद/ अगर)- हे एका विशिष्ट प्रकारच्या झाडाला जर इन्फेकशन झालं, तर त्याच्या स्वरक्षणासाठी खोडात तयार होतं. ही झाडे भारतीय उपखंडात प्रामुख्याने आढळतात. भारत, श्रीलंका, कंबोडिया, मलेशिया, थायलंड इत्यादी देश Oud  ची निर्यात करतात. आखाती देशात याला खूप मागणी आहे. तिथे हे पर्फुम मध्ये न वापरता, त्याला जाळून त्याचा धूप घेतात. आपल्याकडील उदबत्ती, किंवा अगरबत्ती हे शब्द मुळात याच पदार्थासाठी वापरले जायचे. 

Sandalwood (चंदन) - चंदन हे जगातील दुसऱ्या क्रमांकाचे सगळ्यात महाग लाकूड आहे. चंदनाच्या तेलाला पर्फुमच्या बाजारात प्रचंड मागणी आहे. चंदनाचे झाड दक्षिण भारतात प्रामुख्याने आढळते. चंदनाची तस्करी तर आपल्या सर्वांना वृत्तपत्रात वाचून माहीतच आहे.



Musk (कस्तुरी)- हा सुगंध नर कस्तुरी मृगाच्या पोटातील ग्रंथींमधून मिळवतात. कस्तुरी मृगाच्या ७ जाती प्रामुख्याने काश्मीर, नेपाळ, सर्बिया, तिबेट येथे सापडतात. जवळजवळ सर्वच जेन्टस पर्फुममध्ये थोड्याबहुत प्रमाणात याचा वापर केला जातो.

दुपारच्या रणरणत्या उन्हातून येऊन  तुम्ही घामेजुन बसला आहात आणि इतक्यात एक हवेची झुळूक तिच्याबरोबर मस्त सुगंध घेऊन येते आणि तुमचं  चित्त क्षणिक का होईना पण प्रसन्न करून जाते.. हा अनुभव आपल्या सगळ्यांना कधी ना कधी आला असणार.

पर्फुम जी एकेकाळी चैनीची गोष्ट समजली जायची ती आजच्या यूथ साठी एक जीवनावश्यक बाब बनली आहे. आज जागतिक पर्फुम बाजारपेठ ही ३५ बिलियन अमेरिकन डॉलर्स आहे आणि २०२२ पर्यंत ती ७० बिलियन च्या घरात जाईल असा  अंदाज आहे.  फ्रान्स हा देश जगातली सगळ्यात उच्च प्रतिची पर्फुम बनवतो. फ्रान्सच्या दक्षिणेला असलेले एक छोटेसे शहर, गहास (Grasse) ही पर्फुमची जागतिक राजधानी समजली जाते. पर्फुम चा वापर मात्र सगळ्यात जास्त अमेरिकेत होतो.

भारतीयांना  सुगंधी द्रव्यं  नवीन नाहीत. आपल्याकडे अत्तर हे अरेबियन पेनिन्सुला मधून आले. इजिप्तमध्ये खूप पूर्वीपासून अत्तराचा वापर व्हायचा. आपल्याकडे मात्र अत्तर हे कायमच एक श्रीमती शौक म्हणून राजे रजवाड्यांपुरते मर्यादित होते. आज भारतात मुख्यतः मुसलमान समाजात अत्तराचा वापर जास्त आढळतो. भारतात अत्तर विक्रेते सुध्या मुसलमानच आहेत. आपल्याकडे फुलांपासून बनविलेली अत्तरे प्रसिद्ध आहेत. मुख्यतः मोगरा, चमेली, गुलाब, जस्मिन, चंदन, केवडा, वाळा असे सुगंध सर्रास आढळतात.

अत्तर आणि पर्फुम यात एक महत्वाचा फरक आहे. अत्तर हे एक सुगंधी तेल असते, जे विविध नैसर्गिक गोष्टींपासुन बनविले जाऊ शकते.  पर्फुम हे या विविध तेलांना, एका विशिष्ट प्रमाणात एकत्रित करुन त्यावर प्रक्रिया करून बनविलेले रसायन असते. पर्फुम्स मध्ये usually अल्कोहोलचा वापर कॅरिअर molecules म्हणून केला जातो ज्यामुळे आपल्याला फ्रॅग्रन्स प्रोजेक्ट झाल्याचे फील येते. अत्तरांमध्ये फक्त ऑईल्स असल्यामुळे त्याचा वास फार दूरपर्यंत जात नाही.

पर्फुमचे त्यातल्या सुगंधी ऑईल्सच्या कॉन्सन्ट्रेशन प्रमाणे ४ प्रकार पडतात-

१. स्प्रे किंवा मिस्ट - हे सगळ्यात माईल्ड असते, आणि यात सुगंधी ऑइल्सच्ये प्रमाण साधारणतः १-३% असते. उरलेले पाणी आणि अल्कोहोल.

२. उ द कलोन - २-४% (यात अल्कोहलचे प्रमाण  पाण्यापेक्षा जास्त्त असते)

३. उ द टॉयलेट - ५-१५%

४. उ द परफा- १५- २०%

अर्थात या पर्फुम्सची किंमत सुद्धा त्यातील ऑइलच्या  प्रमाणात वाढते. उ द परफा हे सगळ्यात महाग असते व ते अंगावर ६-८ तयार आरामात राहते.

पर्फुम मध्ये विविध ऑईल्स एकत्र करायची असल्यामुळे पर्फुम तयार करणे हि एक कला मानली जाते. जसे संगीतात विविध सूर एकत्र येऊन जादू निर्माण करू शकतात, पण जर चुकीचे सूर एकमेकांसोबत आले तर ते कानाला खटकतात , तसेच पर्फुमेचे आहे. जर एकमेकांना पूरक वास सोबत आले तर स्वर्गीय आनंद देऊन जातात, पण जर तिथे गल्लत झाली तर डोकेदुखी (literally) देतात.

पर्फुम अंगावर स्प्रे केल्यावर जसा एखादा राग उलगडत जावा त्याप्रमाणे त्या पर्फुम मधले गंध बाहेर पडू लागतात. या टप्पेवारीने बाहेर येणाऱ्या गंधांना नोट्स म्हणतात. या नोट्स बददल पुढील भागात.

A Tale of two tribes..

The tale dates back to very old days when human race was still hunting for food. There were two tribes, Tribe-W and Tribe-E, living in a nearby territory.

Tribe-E was living in the same area for many centuries. They had a long and glorious history. They had their Heroes who achieved a lot in different fields from science to medicine, and from arts to politics. Unfortunately for Tribe-E, most of their ancestor's knowledge lost in the passage of time. Still they held a very high degree of pride in the achievements of their ancestors.

Strikingly opposite, Tribe-W had migrated to this place very recently, with no known history, no heroes, nothing to hold pride about. They were living in the present. The people were working hard to understand different things around them and using this understanding to improve their life.

One day while playing with branches of a tree, one curious member from Tribe-W came up with a new idea of a weapon, which can be used for hunting. It was a bow-arrow, and was very effective for hunting fast moving animals from long distances. The chief of the tribe encouraged this idea and a team started working on this newly found weapon to increase its range and accuracy. In a few months time, with hard work and dedication, they mastered the art of making a perfect bow and a very sharp arrow.

All this time, members of the Tribe-E were watching Tribe-W people hunting with this new weapon and they understood how effective it was. Some of the scholars from the tribe quoted the use of a similar weapon from their ancestor's literature. The weapon was commonly used by Tribe-E ancestors a few centuries back!! All the tribesmen were extremely happy and proud of their ancestor's achievement.

In Tribe-W, the new weapon made hunting relatively easy and took less of their time. In the free time, they started enriching their sociocultural experience by spending more time with family and friends, and cultivating different hobbies. The expert bow and arrow makers started producing excess of these weapons to trade it with nearby tribes, including Tribe-E.

Even after few years of expertise in making bows and arrows, an expert from Tribe-W would take half an hour to make one arrow, and 2 hours to make a bow. In a day, working for 9 hours, he would make 2 bows and 10 arrows. The price of a bow was five times that of an arrow, justified by the time taken to produce the respective. Though the income from bows and arrows was comparable, the art of making a perfect bow was much more complex and involved than that of making an arrow.

A wise man from Tribe-W came up with a new idea. He suggested to transfer the less complex skill, that of making arrows, to Tribe-E. It saved almost 5 hours for Tribe-W expert to concentrate on the more complex task of making bows. It was a win-win situation, as Tribe-E got to learn the technique to make arrows, and then they could trade these arrows with the bows made by Tribe-W. Tribe-E people started working very hard to make more and more arrows. They were happy because it was bringing prosperity in their tribe.

In Tribe-W, people were now getting more free time which they invested in doing research and generating ideas to make human life even better. They came up with ideas for generating energy, storing it, locomotives, guns, farming and many more. At this time, they thought they were wasting their precious time in making bows, which was now a routine task. Thus they subsequently transferred this skill to Tribe-E as well. Tribe-E was now on the seventh heaven as they started providing the end-to-end solution for hunting.

By this time, the researchers in Tribe-W had matured the concept of Guns as a modern hunting weapon. They started producing guns and bullets. These were extremely effective compared to bows and arrows, and thus threw the later out of business.
People of Tribe-E were jobless and starving...they went back to Tribe-W to ask for some different form of work to feed themselves...This was anticipated by wise men of Tribe-W, who now transferred the skill of making bullets to Tribe-E, keeping the key skill of making guns within their own tribe. And the story continued...

Even till date, many members of Tribe-E have not understood the importance of technology and research. They are still spending their time in carrying out secondary tasks given to them by Tribe-W, and feeling extremely proud of the money they are earning and the prosperity they are bringing to their tribe. Many people of Tribe-E are far away from understanding that the trade with Tribe-W started with a win-win situation, but its not anymore the same...We hope that the day will come when they start investing their time and money into research, technology and idea generation, so in future they can dictate the terms. We hope that they learn to lead and not to follow..

Money, banking and federal reserve

Last weekend, I watched a video on the US monitory system, and the concept of fractional reserve banking. The video was opposing the idea of abolishing the gold standard. It suggested that the cycle of compression-expansion of economy, inflation and then inevitable depression are all inherently present in the current model of Federal reserve in USA.
Fer-Res has not made their balance-sheet public since 1980s. Each time the US government wants extra money for either internal infrastructural developments, or for a war, they take it from Fed. as a loan, which un-necessary inflates the currency.
In USA, other commercial banks can legally have the fractional reserve ratio as 1:10, which means if a bank has $100 as a deposit, they can lend around $900...which actually are coming from thin air..there is no base for this $900.

After watching the video, I understood the disadvantages of having the fractional reserve system, but the video never talked about any advantages, which I believe it must have. What are your views on abolishing the gold standard. Any comments?

In praise of Idleness

काल राजीव उपाध्ये यांनी केलेला Russel Bertrand यांच्या "In Praise of Idleness" या निबंधाचा स्वॆरानुवाद वाचला. आजच्या समाजात कष्टाला दिले गेलेले अवास्तव महत्व समाजाला कसे घातक आहे या विषयावरचा हा निबंध आहे. लेखकाच्या मतानुसार पुर्वापार श्रीमंत जमीनदार मंड्ळी, कष्ट करणे कसे चांगले, व कष्टातुन मिळवलेल्या पॆशाचा उपभोग घेणे, निवांतपणा अनुभवणे कसे वाईट आहे हेच कामगार वर्गाला पटवुन देत आले आहेत. यामुळे कामगारांच्यात आराम हा हराम आहे असा समज द्रुढ झाला आणि त्याचा सगळ्यात जास्त फायदा या श्रीमंत लोकांना झाला. या निबंधातील टाचण्यांच्या उत्पादनाचे उदाहरण समर्पक आहे. एकुणच हा लेख मनाला पुर्ण पटत नसला, तरी विचार करायला नक्कीच लावतो.

Palaver with Kapil Dev

That was a routine sunday afternoon...I woke up late...at around 12.30 to find myself alone at house...I was feeling low for no reason. I called up India to chat with some friends, but my mood was still not in place...I got a phone call from my flatmates asking me to join them. They were in central london seeing some Museums...I told them that I would join..but from inside I was not feeling like...After taking a long soothing bath I went down in the living room. Just to kill my time, I swiched ON the TV...it was French Open Men's Final Live!!! I had almost forgotten about it...I watched Nadal winning 3rd consecative time...He really tamed Federer on that day..After getting some enthusiasm after watching the match, I decided to move out to central London to roam around alone..I got down at my favourate place 'Piccadilly Circus' and sat on the bench near the fountain..On the hot and humid day, the sprinckles of cold water from the fountain were felt like a devine thing. I managed to catch my flatemates in the late evening and then we went for a dinner. It was an Italian restaurant, and we orderd a combo 3 course dinner. As we were getting along with the main course, Aditya almost shouted.."Come on...He is Kapil Dev" he could not believe his senses..and neither could I when I really saw Kapil Dev walking in the same restaurant...

For a die heart cricket fan like me, this moment was no less than being on cloud 9..We had some doubts whehter to go ahead and talk to him or wait for him to settle down etc...Finally the whole bunch (4 of us) got up and went to him...He responsed with a welcome gesture..We shook hand with him..He enquired about us..We had a chat for 3-4 minutes..At last, we asked for a photograph..and he said " Itni kya jaldi hai...u finish ur food and then we will have a nice photograph" It was so kind of him...We returned back to our table and finished our remaining course..but the mind was still not at its place...we were lost in the era of the great player...He won the World cup for India in 1983 in the same city of London...
After finishing our dinner, we went to him and asked him if we shud wait till he finishes his dinner...but he promptly replied that he wud continue his dinner after our photo session..We asked a waitress to click some of our group snaps...
We left the restaurant with the photograph and more importantly, the memory of this great incident stored permanently in our mind. I was no longer feeling low...This is how some events change you mood..
